On October 2, Fat Dog will release their second album, ‘Cancel Me (I’m Tired)’. The first, ‘WOOF’, contained hits like ‘Running’ and ‘King of the Slugs’.
Fat Dog can approach the sound of The Rapture or Sleaford Mods, interchangeably. It can be seen in the two previews that we had of this album: the title track, which they say was inspired by John Lennon but could not be more designed for clubs; and ‘Go Fuck Urself’, a punk adaptation – totally sui generis – of the Human League sound.
‘Shit Love’, the third single they release today, is our Song of the Day. Fat Dog deploy all their energy in this production halfway between Primal Scream and The Streets, which perfectly captures that “living fast” that all debuting groups face. The lyrics go from brown to brown, from “it’s a nightmare that’s coming for me” and “I didn’t know being a bastard was your thing” to “are you trying to kill me?”… passing through “it’s Monday, it’s not my funniest day.” The chorus talks all the time about “cooking with gas”, accentuating the sense of danger that all the percussion has.
Perhaps the life that the 7 members of Fat Dog have faced, according to Domino’s press release, serves as a clue to their inspiration:
“At some point on that tour, we all had some kind of little breakdown,” says Chris, who remembers losing his mind in Los Angeles, banging his head against the wall while wearing an American football helmet (…) The Fat Dog frontman (Joe Love) got married in Las Vegas after proposing to his girlfriend in San Francisco. “We played a concert for two people in Las Vegas,” Joe recalls, “and the next day I got married.” And so, with the depressed Elvis ringing in his ears, Joe came home and began work on Fat Dog’s second album.
