Dua Lipa recommends ‘Bad Habit’ by Alana S. Portero

Dua Lipa, besides being a pop star, runs her own weekly newsletter, Service95, in which she and her editors cover topics related to fashion, art, politics, travel, photography, gastronomy and, of course, music. She also covers literature, as Dua Lipa is an avid reader. She says that, since she discovered Malorie Jackman’s ‘Noughts and Ends’, a novel about racism, at the age of 11, she has made it a habit to recommend books to her friends and that is where the idea for Service 95 was born.

Service95 – so called because Lipa was born in 1995 – has launched its own book club and the newsletter has had its own podcast for a year now, in which Dua Lipa herself interviews the authors of the recommended works in depth. Each month is dedicated to a work, and the podcast has already featured authors such as Tomasz Jedrowski, Malorie Jackman herself, and musical artists who have published books such as Patti Smith or Michelle Zauner, namely Japanese Breakfast.

The next guest on the Service95 podcast will be Madrid-born Alana S. Portero, known for her writing on feminism and LGBT activism focused on the trans experience. Dua Lipa already recommended Portero’s acclaimed book, ‘La mala costumbre’, last May in a new installment of her weekly newsletter and, now, she will dedicate the month of September to unraveling this important autobiographical work in which Portero recounts her life as a trans person in Spain immediately after the post-Franco transition, during the 80s and 90s. On Instagram, Dua Lipa has shown herself to be moved by the work and has recommended it to her nearly 90 million followers. Will there be an interview?
