‘Diet Pepsi’ may be Addison Rae’s ‘Espresso’

Addison Rae, the TikToker turned singer whom we met for her hit ‘Obsessed’, and who we later heard in a remix of ‘Von dutch’ by Charli XCX, with whom she had already collaborated on ‘2 die 4’, releases a new single.

‘Diet Pepsi’ takes its title from a drink, just like ‘Espresso’. We don’t know if Britney Spears will like it, since she’s more of a reg-reg-regular Pepsi person, but ‘Diet Pepsi’ should become a hit for Addison Rae. It’s the Song Of The Day.

Although, if we’re talking about pop songs named after drinks, perhaps we should talk about Lana Del Rey’s ‘Cola’ and ‘Diet Mountain Dew’, since Lana’s sound completely soaks into ‘Diet Pepsi’, to the point of sounding like a lost single from ‘Born to Die’ or reminding us of the first time we heard Taylor Swift’s great ‘Wildest Dreams’. It’s like Lana, but with the pop turned up.

The lyrics of ‘Diet Pepsi’ do not hide Lana’s influence either, as they seem written from her perspective or directly based on her style. It’s Addison Rae doing the ‘Lolita’ for example in

«My ass looks good in these ripped blue jeans
“My cheeks are red like cherries in the spring”

or in

«When we drive in your car, I’m your baby (So sweet)
Losing all my innocence in the backseat

On the one hand, Diet Pepsi feels like a “decaffeinated” version of Lana Del Rey. Or a version of Lana imagined by artificial intelligence. On the other hand, Diet Pepsi is just as addictive as regular Pepsi… or Coca-Cola. (Editor’s note: non-sponsored article).
