Bruno Mars has not released his own album in seven years – he did with his Silk Sonic project – and Lady Gaga in four. Two of the powerhouses of American pop will join forces on a new single called ‘Die with a Smile’, which was released tonight at 9:00 pm in Los Angeles, 6:00 am in Spain.
The press release for ‘Die with a Smile’ promised a “timeless ballad” and it hasn’t lied. Bruno and Gaga, experts in writing great ballads, have created a ballad that knows how to grab onto big emotions without sounding trite. Not even its apocalyptic slogan (“if the world were to end, I’d like it to end with you”) makes ‘Die with a Smile’ less memorable.
‘Die with a Smile’ sounds like a Bruno ballad rather than a Gaga one, as it’s closer to ‘Leave the Door Open’ than ‘Shallow’. Gaga herself has confirmed this observation and, in an interview, explained that Mars had already started writing the song when she called her to finish it together.
The news was originally revealed by the HITS Daily Double portal, known for leaking industry information from within, and was later confirmed by Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga.
First came the teasers. Gaga had uploaded a video of herself playing the piano while wearing a Bruno Mars t-shirt, and Bruno Mars then uploaded an image of himself wearing a Gaga t-shirt. Both have finally revealed the cover art for ‘Die with a Smile’.
On the one hand, it is said that ‘Die with a Smile’ could be part of Bruno Mars’ new album. On the other, that the song would be linked to the soundtrack of ‘Joker: Folie à deux’, the new Joker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, which is released in October. Neither of these two options has been confirmed. Gaga, at least, has left one piece of information: that ‘Die with a Smile’ is coming out “while you wait for LG7.”
