Dexter’s last single in the Newsagent is ‘Special’

Dexter in the Newsagent is the project of the singer and songwriter in southern London Charmaine Ayoku. Since 2020, Ayoku has shared his music on streaming platforms, with recordings so homemade that some of his first singles, such as the acoustic ‘maybe the problem is me’ and ‘Same Way’, were recorded with a mobile phone. His music has come to flirt with the R&B (‘Still Got Time’) and transmits an eminently British spirit: one of his EPS is titled ‘I Do Love a Good Sandwich’.

Recently “Dexter” has introduced vestically danceable rhythms in his songs, such as those of the mostly acoustics ‘Sub you’ – the guitar seems its favorite instrument – or ‘Special’, the song of today (thanks to Jerome for sharing it in the forums).

‘Special’ is the recognition of an emotional dependence: “I can love you how you want me to do it / I can’t be alone” is the first phrase that is heard in the song. “I need you like coffee” is another of the most memorable. However, the production, designed by Ayoku with Kurisu and Saionnthebeat, combines soft acoustic guitars, shy beats with airs of Dancehall and subtle effects of electronic magic, building a haven of serenity that contrasts with the despair expressed in the letter.
