David Lynch, one of the most influential directors in the history of cinema thanks to films like ‘Blue Velvet’, ‘Mulholland Drive’ and series like ‘Twin Peaks’, has died at the age of 78. This is what his family announced on Facebook:
“It is with deep sadness that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and artist David Lynch. We would appreciate some privacy at this time. There is a big hole in the world now that he is no longer with us. But, as he said, ‘Keep your eyes on the donut and not the hole.’ “It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way.”
Last year, Lynch was diagnosed with pulmonary emphysema, which forced him to stay home indefinitely due to the risk of contracting any type of infection, which could be fatal. The acclaimed director blamed the diagnosis on the smoking habit he had maintained for most of his life. “It would be very bad for me to get sick, even if it was just a cold,” he declared at the time.
Lynch had not sat in the director’s chair since 2017, when he returned to one of his most important creations, ‘Twin Peaks’, 27 years after the first season. The evocative artist’s concerns also included the field of music, releasing three studio albums: ‘BlueBOB’ (2001), ‘Crazy Clown Time’ (2011) and ‘The Big Dream’ (2013). In addition, he worked on three collaborative albums, six soundtracks, two spoken word albums, an EP and 20 singles.
