Cleo Sol continues to demonstrate in her new ‘Gentlewoman’, our Album of the Week, that she is one of the most essential voices of the contemporary neo soul and R&B scene. The one who can also be heard as a vocalist in SAULT is an expert at hypnotizing with voices and melodies, and the title song of her latest LP is a great example of this. ‘Gentlewoman’ is the Song of the Day.
The elegance of the production, somewhere between neo soul and the most minimalist doo-wop, is the most obvious value of the song, which remains calm and focused throughout its duration. Sol avoids anything resembling boredom with the strength of its melodies, totally seductive and worth getting lost in.
The British artist puts herself in the shoes of a “gentlewoman” desperate to show her “gentleman” that he can always count on her (“Don’t leave me, don’t leave me, don’t leave me out of this / Because I can be your gentlewoman«).
Thus, the lyrics of the song are as peaceful as its music. In this sense, it is a perfect match: “I believe in the truth you fight for / You wait, the world is yours / For you to let me in, all you have to do is open the door.”
