Claudia Arenas went from being the first nominee of Operación Triunfo 2025, finally beating Iván Rojo, to becoming the fifth finalist of the edition. She achieved this thanks to her beautiful timbre and her musical training, evident not only in her ability to play the piano, but also in her musical taste, which led her to compete with such unusual songs as ‘Overjoyed’ by Stevie Wonder. Of course, her version of ‘Latin Girl’ by Emilia went viral on platforms and reached the official charts, being the only song from that edition to achieve it.
Arenas’ debut was, therefore, highly anticipated. Although his first bet was the single ‘big mistake’, published after his departure from the Academy, it was expected that, together with Sony Music, he would prepare a larger release to officially present his career. That’s where ‘Like a Magnet’ comes in.
‘Like a magnet’ is the acoustic song with which Arenas reintroduces himself to the public. The luminous composition, created among others with the revelation artist Paula Felices, is based on a base of voice and guitar and is then wrapped in vocal harmonies and subtle electronic effects. However, unlike in several of the singles that emerged from the edition, here the architecture of the production does not take precedence as much as the brilliance of the melody.
Closer to the acoustic moments of Billie Eilish than to the easy comparisons with Taylor Swift or Olivia Rodrigo, ‘Like a Magnet’ is a romantic song that expresses a deep devotion to the person you love, although it is slightly weighed down by that tendency, so common among many current young artists, to drag and even almost stammer the phrases. Arenas sings of the fear he feels when that person does not appear in his dreams and of the desire to wake up every day by his side.
That idealism conveyed by the lyrics is reflected in the sound, which evokes a kind of magical realism. And magical realism is, precisely, what the accomplished video clip proposes, in which Arenas appears immersed in different everyday situations treated from a surreal perspective.
