We first met Chico Blanco thanks to collaborations such as ‘ojala’ with C. Tangana and, shortly after, through his own singles as inspired as ‘Gominola’, where he mixed house and pop with a naturalness and a sense of humor that made him one of the essential names of the new Spanish electronic music and the festival circuit.
Having settled in Berlin for some time now, Pablo Cobo has dedicated the last year to slowly unveiling ‘Amnesia’, his long-awaited debut album. After a long gestation, the album finally saw the light of day this weekend.
The colorful deep house of ‘Omaigach’, together with Girl Ultra, or the Balearic house of ‘Sunset’, with NAZZZ, already anticipated the universe of ‘Amnesia’: a work conceived between Berlin, an imagined Ibiza and a deeply Mediterranean sensibility. In Chico Blanco’s own words, it is “a dance-pop fantasy suspended between memory and imagination.”
Clinging to an elegant, sophisticated and deeply escapist classic house, ‘Amnesia’ shines both in the energetic hits of ‘Baila’ or ‘Gira Gira’ and in more luminous moments. Among them stands out ‘Special Place’, chosen as the last single from the album and today’s Song of the Day.
Supported by a classic house bass drum and adorned with a beautiful piano with an Afro-Caribbean aroma, ‘Special Place’ is probably the song that best summarizes the Mediterranean side of ‘Amnesia’ without giving up the hedonism of the dance floor. While the production invites you to get lost among sunsets and clubs by the sea, Regularfantasy’s voice sings about that place that “can’t get out of your head”: perhaps a nightclub, perhaps the memory of a person.
Furthermore, ‘Special Place’ perfectly summarizes the dialogue that ‘Amnesia’ poses between the most classic house music and a fully contemporary sensibility. Autotune, a taste for sound collage and the delicate treatment of voices coexist with timeless rhythms in a production full of small details. One of the great gems that is leaving this hot summer.
