Charli xcx has been chosen Hitmaker of the Year by Variety and has given an interview in which she reviews her entire career, but above all the massive success that ‘BRAT’ has brought her. The British artist has explained why people are “brat”, how and when she did the famous marketing of the album and what awaits her in her adventures as an actress.
The iconic lime green and simplicity of ‘BRAT’ is now pop history. It turns out that it came with a big change in Charli’s process: “Normally when I make an album there is a transitional phase after recording the album in which I think about how I want to present the music. With this one, I did that first, thinking about marketing before making the music,” he says.
The word that defines the entire album was the first thing he had, being extremely useful: “It put limits on songwriting, because if I was writing a song with AG Cook or Cirkut we could directly say ‘that’s not brat’, and we would immediately move on.” to do something that was brat,” he explains. Charli also tries to find an answer to why people are “brat”: “I think sometimes we overcompensate out of insecurity or feeling uncomfortable, and that’s where the two things fit.”
In the last lines of the interview, Charli reflects on the new level of fame she has achieved after the success of her latest work, and she still doesn’t know what to think: “I’m at a crossroads, I think, in my life, in which obviously “my music has…yeah, reached a new level of success, I guess,” he replies, without getting to the point.
He says that everything has changed “a lot” after the album and that he does experience things like having photos taken when he doesn’t want to or having everyone look at him when he enters places: “Sometimes I love that feeling and sometimes I don’t, so “I don’t think there is a clear and simple answer.”
The author of ‘Vroom Vroom’ has also shared her own Spotify Wrapped on social media. Bladee, Air, AG Cook, Clairo and Mk.gee are their top 5 most listened to artists. These are Charli xcx’s five most listened to songs in 2024, with a very “brat” surprise: ‘Peroxide’ by Ecco2k, ‘Bloodwork’ by The Dare, ‘Guess’ by herself, ‘These Days’ by Nico and ‘Tis Adeies Nychtes’ by Arleta in fifth place.
