The new album by the legendary Chaka Khan will be released on September 18. He had the idea of calling it ‘Chakzilla’ and 3 singles have already been released from it: the title track, a collaboration with Snoop Doog that sounds expendable even if it is going to get the biggest streams, and a great ‘Curious Subject’ which is our Song of the Day for this Sunday.
Co-written by Chaka Khan with Sia and Greg Kurstin (like the other previews), it is the best composition of the two authors in recent times. Greg Kurstin was on last year’s huge Wolf Alice album, among other things, but Sia hadn’t gotten off the ground in a while and Chaka Khan hadn’t released an album in 7 years.
With a disco-funk base, the song starts from the idea of feeling “a curious subject” to conclude that “we all are.” Chaka Khan begins by saying that her therapist, family and friends tell her that she gets into too much. They make her feel strange, but soon the feeling becomes collective.
With eighties synths, piano details and of course an irresistible vocal take, ‘Curious Subject’ brings us back to the artist who triumphed in the ’80s with ‘Ain’t Nobody’ and ‘Through the Fire’. The latter was recently recovered in a “COLORS Session”, the same as this great new song, which just came out this Friday.
The 10-track album will include a song featuring Sia, ‘Cool U Down,’ and another with Lenny Kravitz, ‘Bring the Party.’
