Britney Spears has sold her music catalog for a large sum of money, TMZ confirms. Although the exact figure has not been made public, it is estimated to be around $200 million, an amount similar to the agreement that Justin Bieber signed and which would have closed a “historic deal.”
Spears signed the sale of her publishing stake on December 30 to the music publisher Primary Wave, reports the American portal, which has had access to documents related to the agreement. This is the same company that in 2020 acquired 80% of Stevie Nicks’ publishing catalog for $100 million.
Spears’ musical catalog includes pop classics such as ‘Toxic’, ‘…Baby One More Time’, ‘Oops!… I Did It Again’, ‘Womanizer’ and ‘I’m a Slave 4 U’. According to TMZ, Spears is “happy with the decision” and is “celebrating by spending time with her children.”
Spears hasn’t been the primary songwriter on most of her songs, but she is a co-writer on about 40 of them, including hits like ‘Everytime.’ Variety notes that the figure TMZ mentions is unlikely to include the sale of Spears’ name and image rights, unless the figure is “significantly higher” than rumored.
Spears is just one of many artists who have sold their catalog to a publisher in recent years, a list that includes Bruce Springsteen, Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Queen, Neil Young, Shakira, KISS, Sting and Phil Collins.
