Brent Hinds has died in a motorcycle accident on the night of Wednesday, August 20, when he was only 51 years old. Apparently, as the local press reports, a van has skipped a “yield” in Atlanta causing a collision of vehicles that has been fatal.
Brent Hinds has been co-leader and guitarist of Mastodon from 2000 to this 2025 in which he was thrown out of the group, not without some controversy. Specifically, he said on Instagram that his groupmates were “horrible people.”
In any case, he was present on albums as relevant to the progressive metal as the debut of the group ‘remission’ (2002) or ‘Levathan’ (2004) and later in ‘The Hunter’ (2011) -which presented in Spain -and ‘eleven more’ Round the Sun ‘(2014). His last long dates from 2021.
Apart from the fact that his guitars, amplis, pedals and effects have been meticulously studied in the world of metal (curiously he started playing the banjo), Brent was also a character capable of putting his life at risk for a party, or of hanging things like the «Mastodong«, a giant doler carved by himself. That the group had its humor was clear when they also created the “affection” in the “twerking” era, despite coming from the world of metal. They also took a split with Feist.
The group has not stopped sharing a message of pain, leaving the differences in recent times: «We are in a state of deep sadness and pain … Last night, Brent Hinds died because of a tragic accident. We are disconsolate, shocked and even trying to process the loss of this creative force with whom we share so many triumphs, milestones and the creation of music that has moved so many people. We accompany Brent’s family, friends and fans. We ask you to respect everyone’s privacy in these difficult times ».
