David Bowie’s posthumous releases continue coinciding with the tenth anniversary of his death. On September 18, Parlophone will publish ‘The Shel Talmy Recordings’, a compilation of recordings made in 1965, when the artist still called himself Davie Jones.
The album brings together 22 songs recorded with producer Shel Talmy (The Who, The Kinks), including ten previously unreleased songs and demos. The release also includes collaborations with Jimmy Page and pianist Nicky Hopkins, and one of the rescued songs, ‘I Want Your Love’, can now be heard.
Among the ten unreleased recordings, several never-released demos stand out, such as ‘Today’, ‘I Live in Dreams’ or ‘Bars of the County Jail’. There is no hidden bombshell from Bowie’s best-known period, but there is a valuable document of his first steps as a composer and performer.
In addition to solo material, ‘The Shel Talmy Recordings’ recovers Bowie’s recordings with the bands The Manish Boys and Davie Jones & The Lower Third, just before definitively adopting the stage name David Bowie. The compilation arrives a year after ‘I Can’t Give Everything Away (2002-2016)’, the box set dedicated to the last stage of his career.
