Bon Iver has emerged from his slumber to return to the cabin where it all began. It’s been more than five years since his last project, the refined and electronic ‘i, i’. The wait will end on October 18 with the release of ‘SABLE’, a three-song EP of which we can already listen to one, ‘SPEYSID E’.
The intimate feel of SABLE shines through in SPEYSID E, which is reminiscent of For Emma, Forever Ago. Sharp acoustic guitars welcome the highly personal and autobiographical track. “Now I know I can’t do no good / I wish I could,” Vernon sings on the opening line, using his well-known falsetto. Throughout the track, it becomes clear that this is an apology.
Bon Iver debuted this song live two years ago, one year after writing it: “When I made this song, I was feeling a lot of guilt, which is an important emotion to have. It’s also an important emotion to let go of,” Vernon said.
The three songs on ‘SABLE’, according to their press release, serve as a “reset and reintroduction.” They were written between 2020 and 2023 and are centered on vocal and guitar arrangements. The lyrics are described as “direct projections of guilt, anguish and confusion, but also unfinished business.”
