Bob Weir was one of the founders of the Grateful Dead, an essential formation of American folk rock and later of psychedelic rock, from the moment in which members of two previous bands merged to give rise to the “grateful dead”. The Grateful Dead were active until the death of Jerry Garcia, their leader, in 1995, with their members taking on new projects thereafter.
Bob Weir has died from cancer that he could not overcome at the age of seventy-eight. Rhythm guitarist, he wrote many of the group’s classics and contributed vocals, always being a team player more than a forward looking for a special role. Weir was also the one who brought an element of spirituality to the group, being one of those hippies who opted for meditation and calm in the face of a world that was increasingly speeding up.
With the Grateful Dead he signed classics such as “Truckin”, “Sugar Magnolia” or “Weather Report Suite”, being a fundamental element in albums such as “Workingman’s Dead” (70), “American Beauty” (70), “From Mars Hotel” (74) or “In The Dark” (87), as well as in the long concerts that the band offered for years, a fundamental element in the trajectory of a formation that ended up planting the seed of the jam bands.
Bob Weir not only kept the legacy of the Grateful Dead alive throughout his career, but even during the group’s time he also published solo in a career that spanned decades. He was also one of those artists who supported a long list of new talents by adding them to his solo band or supporting them in their careers.
With his death, the hard core of one of the most legendary bands in American rock disappears. Let us remember that in August 1995 he died Jerry Garcia and in October 2024 he died Phil Leshanother of the Grateful Dead’s co-founders, at the age of eighty-four.
