Blossoms are looking for a new UK number 1 with ‘Gary’. This is their 5th LP and this would be their 4th number 1, as until now their only album that has not managed to reach the top in the islands was their second, ‘Cool Like You’.
So far, ‘Gary’ has sold more than 11,000 copies over the weekend, is number one in the midweeks, but is closely followed by Chappell Roan’s album, which will take the win in streaming. The result will be known on Friday, which we predict will be close.
For the moment, the title track is worth highlighting as Song of the Day. ‘Gary’ is once again an album rich in pop melodies, sometimes with a sixties tone, sometimes more synthetic, like the Killers-style keyboards on ‘Perfect Me’ or ‘I Like Your Look’, inspired by Blondie’s ‘Rapture’ and Joan Baez’s ‘Time Rag’, and co-written by CMAT.
‘Gary’, from the 60s section, is inspired by an absurd story heard on the radio: that of a giant gorilla that was stolen from a park, Lanarkshire Garden Centre, in 2023. Rick Astley tells you about it at the beginning of the video and then goes on to collaborate on the development, adding a humorous note to this bouncy melody. The group walks a gorilla, but it is a “brother”, not the real Gary, who remains missing.
The video for ‘Gary’ was a continuation of the earlier video for the disco-themed ‘What Can I Say After I’m Sorry?’, which Blossoms took inspiration from in Jungle. This was followed by videos for the aforementioned ‘Perfect Me’ and ‘I Like Your Look’ in what can only be considered a cohesive, fun and well-crafted campaign.
