Björk denounces the kidnapping of singer Magga Stína by Israel

Björk has denounced the “kidnapping” of her childhood friend, the Icelandic singer Magga Stína, by the Israeli army. Stína was among the crew of the flotillas that set sail for Gaza to open the humanitarian corridor, following in the footsteps of the Swedish activist Greta Thunberg. In the last few hours, Israel has intercepted new ships heading to Gaza from international waters, and has detained 150 people, including eight Spaniards.

According to an Icelandic media, Stína had joined the Freedom Flotilla and was aboard a ship called Conscience that was leaving from Egypt.

In her statement, Björk expresses her support for Greta and Magga for their efforts to “stop the genocide in Gaza” and compares the relationship between Palestine and Israel to Iceland’s 600 years of colonial history. Likewise, it urges the Icelandic authorities to suspend all economic relations with Israel until the massacre stops.

“I think activism is as diverse as humans are,” Björk writes. “It is illegal to let the population die of hunger and prevent that food from reaching children.”

Magga Stína is especially known in the music world for her 1998 debut album, ‘An Album’, which contains the single ‘Naturally’. Other of his releases are ‘Jólaveisla’, a Christmas album with Hljómsveit Harðar Braga, published in 2002, or a live album released in 2020.

In 2018, Stína, whose real name is Margrét Kristín Blöndal, entered politics after being elected president of the Samtök leigjenda (“Tenants Association”) in Iceland, although the current president is someone else.
