Björk calls for Greenland independence

After the capture of Maduro by the US administration, without such a decision even having passed through Congress, many eyes have been on Greenland. Trump has flirted on several occasions with the possibility of hiring her, to the indignation of Denmark, and Björk is among those who have raised their voices, going further in calling for her independence.

He says in a message left on Facebook: “I wish that all Greenlanders achieve independence. We Icelanders are extremely relieved to have managed to separate from the Danes in 1944. Thus, we did not lose our language. Otherwise my children would speak Danish now.

He continues, linking to a news story from The Guardian: “I feel immense and repeated compassion for Greenlanders, especially for the case of forced contraception, when 4,500 girls as young as 12 were fitted with an IUD, unknowingly, between 1966 and 1970: my age and younger.” The goal was to reduce the population of Greenland.

Additionally, Björk links to another Guardian story about stolen babies: “Even today, the Danes treat Greenlanders as if they were second-class human beings, separating children from their parents in 2025. Colonialism has always given me chills, and the possibility of my fellow Greenlanders passing from one cruel colonizer to another is too brutal to even imagine.”

Björk ends the text with a cry for independence, in a nod to her song ‘Declare Independance’, which she has adapted over the years to different political causes, such as Tibet or repression in Russia.
