Sanguijuelas del Guadiana is a group originally from Extremadura that, with a repertoire of just a dozen published songs, has captured considerable public attention over the last couple of years. Among the media that have played his music is Radio3, which has released ‘100 Amapolas’, ultimately his most listened to song. And also one of those that best defines the sound of a group that is situated in that imaginary space that separates Estopa from Daft Punk.
A mixture of heat, guitars and synthesizers is the bet of this trio of musicians formed by Carlos, Juan and Víctor, three friends from Casas de Don Pedro, a town located in Extremadura’s Siberia, northeast of Badajoz, who grew up listening to “Extremoduro, Triana, Estopa and Nirvana”, and who are now going on tour claiming the town festival.
Their songs, like ‘Septiembre’ or ‘La gap’, transmit a mix of joy and nostalgia that refers to the quinqui song of past times, but Sanguijuelas del Guadiana seek to update that reference using electronic textures. Of course, they do not forget to claim their rural and specifically Extremaduran original in their lyrics and video clips: one of their most popular songs is a version of ‘Llevadme a mi Extremadura’ by Los Cabales, an iconic Extremaduran music group.
The return to the roots of Sanguijuelas del Guadiana is literal and fundamental to understand its formation and consolidation. Before fully dedicating themselves to their musical project, the three members were forced to move to cities like Cáceres or Madrid to “advance academically.” However, the decision to consolidate the group was marked by a return to the rural environment: they chose to grow from there, and not from the city.
Sanguijuelas del Guadiana is one of the bands that will tour Spain in 2025 through the Girando por Salas platform. Murcia, on January 31, is the first stop of his Verbena Tour in Vena, which continues on February 8 in Mayorga, Valladolid, on March 28 in Pamplona, on April 10 in Valencia, on May 29 in Santiago de Compostela and on May 30 in Vilanova de Arousa, Pontevedra.
