Bad Management are known for their fun and ironic, above all, punk, which they themselves have baptized as “ñunk”. Every now and then they also prove that they can make a pop rock song that is catchy, smart and hilarious at the same time. ‘Ex-Ex (couple)’ is the Song of the Day.
Sometimes a simple and solid concept can work wonders. We have heard the chords and melodies of ‘Ex-Ex (couple)’ a thousand times in pop, that’s how it is. However, never in such a fun way. The protagonist of the song is determined to forget his ex, while singing about going “to the market” or eating with his dog to fill the gaps left by the other person. Being his ex-partner is difficult for him. That’s why she wants to be his “ex-ex-partner.”
The chorus, between saxophone lines and choruses, is a pop fantasy that recycles the chorus of ‘Neither you nor anyone’, probably Alaska and Dinarama’s most iconic song: “Where is our unsolvable error / I no longer want to be your ex-partner / I want to be your ex-ex-partner,” they sing.
The verses, yes, are as absurd as the best moments of Bad Management: “They told me that you no longer remember me / And I think you’re jopetas, mecachis, geez.” In the last lines, the narrator is pure anticlimax: “You said my songs weren’t good / And look, now I work at a McDonald’s.” Sometimes this is enough to have a bop.
