Bad Bunny has turned his Super Bowl performance into a celebration of Latin culture, choosing to combat the hate of ICE and Trump with pure love. The Puerto Rican’s performance has included collaborations with Lady Gaga, with a salsa version of ‘Die With A Smile’, and Ricky Martin, who performed ‘LO QUE LE PASÓ A HAWAII’.
The Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara (California) was excitedly awaiting Bad Bunny’s turn, who began his set with ‘Tití Me Preguntó’ in the middle of a field of what look like sugar canes. While ‘Yo Perreo Sola’, ‘EoO’ and ‘VOY A LLEVARTE PA PR’ sound one after the other, the Puerto Rican makes it clear that “they are listening to music from Puerto Rico.”
In ‘MONACO’, he replaces the lyrics of the song with some words of inspiration (“My name is Benito Martínez Ocasio and if I am here it is because I never stopped believing in myself, and you should believe in yourself too”) to go directly to a wedding that, according to Variety, was not a bad one. This is when Lady Gaga delights with the unexpected version of ‘Die With A Smile’. The moment when Bad Bunny and Gaga dance together during ‘DANCE INVOLVIDABLE’ is wonderful.
After a series of cameos -Karol G, Pedro Pascal, Cardi B or Jessica Alba- in Bad Bunny’s iconic little house, ‘NUEVAYOL’ remembers the Puerto Rican population of the American city, with an appearance by Toñita herself, mentioned in the song’s lyrics. That’s when Ricky Martin takes the floor to sing ‘LO QUE LE PÁP A HAWAII’, along with the already recognizable chairs from the cover of ‘I Should Have Thrown More Photos’.
The most vindictive moment came in ‘CAFÉ CON RON’, while Bad Bunny recontextualizes the famous “God bless America” to include all the countries of the continent, from Chile to Guyana, while being supported by all these flags. In the end, a message clearly directed at Trump and ICE on Bad Bunny’s ball, while the American and Puerto Rican flags parade hand in hand: “Together, we are America.”
At the beginning of the evening, Green Day performed a medley of songs from ‘American Idiot’ and Charlie Puth was in charge of singing the national anthem on the piano. On the other hand, Brandi Carlile and Coco Jones performed ‘America The Beautiful’ and ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing’, respectively.
