Harry Styles, Jessie Ware, James Blake and Mitski are some of the artists who are about to announce their new releases. Among those who have anticipated them is the British singer-songwriter Arlo Parks, who has already given the details of her third album. And it won’t exactly be continuous: in ‘Ambiguous Desire’, Parks changes her “live band” for “modular synthesizers, Ableton plugins and samplers that reflect the frenetic and vibrant spaces in which she has been immersed.” All this without giving up the “poetic lyric for which she is known.”
If the description sounds good, the first preview sounds better. ‘2sided’, today’s Song Of The Day, uses breakbeat rhythms and sweeping synths at the service of an irresistible melody, sounding danceable and hazy at the same time.
“At its core,” explains Arlo, “‘2SIDED’ is about longing and tension,” an undercurrent compellingly captured in the song. The song, she says, “talks about being struck by a lightning bolt of desire and gathering the courage to put that feeling into words, to make it real.”
The Mercury Prize winner produced ‘Ambiguous Desire’ in New York with producer Baird (Brockhampton, Kevin Abstract), drawing inspiration from the work of artists such as Burial, LCD Soundsystem and the Streets. The album goes on sale on April 3.
He says that he has “danced more than ever” creating the album: “I also made more friends than ever; I found myself in the strange underworld of New York juke nights, unleashed, laughing and laughing and laughing. The core of this album is desire. Desire is a vital force: it is wanting, longing, impulse; We are all alive because there is something or someone we desire; Desire is a driving force.
