David Fairfounding member of Half Japanesehas died at the age of seventy-four years of age. The news was announced by the heads of Thick Syrup Records and Jeff Feuerzeig, director of the 1993 Half Japanese documentary.
David Fair has died from cancer that he could not overcome. David was the founder of Half Japanese with his brother, the renowned Jad Fair, in the late 1970s. Together they created one of the most unique groups on the American independent scene. David was not always in the group, but left the group during part of their career to return in 2014, when they released the album “Overjoyed”.
Through the ranks of Half Japanese, musicians and renowned alternative producers such as Don Fleming or Kramer. Their combination of experimental rock, addictive authentic lo-fi melodies and their attitude away from rock clichés made them a reference for the alternative generation and, in general, American indie artists. Hence the documentary was filmed in 1993 “Half Japanese: The Band That Would Be King”directed by Jeff Feuerzeig, and later, in 2015, “David Fair Is The King”directed by Skizz Cyzyk, considering that David Fair also published solo albums.
The expressions of affection from other artists and people who have worked with him describe him as a very honest, sweet person with a great sense of humor. Rest in peace.
