Víctor Coyote, unclassifiable icon of the Movida, dies

Víctor Aparicio, known artistically as Víctor Coyote, has died, as reported by El Volcán Música, the label with which he worked during his last years. “Life has given us one of those setbacks that leave you in shock,” the company writes in a statement in which it defines the musician as “free, restless, unclassifiable and deeply unique.”

Víctor Coyote began his career in the late 70s and early 80s, at the height of the Vigo and Madrid Movida scenes. He was part of Los Coyotes, a group that was a pioneer in bringing Latin American and regional rhythms and sounds to the realm of rock and punk, an unusual mix in Spanish music at that time. Starting in 1988, the group was renamed Los Coyotes de Víctor Abundancia and published hits like ‘Esta noche me voy a baile’.

He later developed a solo career under the names Víctor Coyote and Víctor Abundancia, always staying away from labels and also exploring other artistic fields. In addition to music, he worked as a cartoonist, designer, painter and actor, and collaborated with projects such as Xabarín Club. His song ‘Jaguarundi’ was also used by TVE as the theme song for the 1995 Vuelta Ciclista a España.

El Volcán precisely highlights his restless character and his constant need to create: «He never stopped exploring, creating, making his projects come true; “He always questioned everything and questioned all of us.” “We are left with his music, his drawings, his stories, his humor, his curiosity and his genius,” the label concludes. In 2020 we were able to get to know his sharp character and sense of humor up close in an interview he gave to this medium.
