Brian May, Queen guitarist and astrophysicist with a doctorate in 2007, is in Spain, “not far from Valencia”, to try to enjoy the total solar eclipse this afternoon. May has been sharing these days on Instagram recommendations to observe the phenomenon safely.
The main one is not to look directly at the Sun and never use telescopes or binoculars pointed towards it. May recommends using the pinhole technique, making a small hole in a piece of cardboard and projecting the image of the Sun onto a white surface. He has also shown how to project the eclipse onto a plate.
May hopes to be able to see totality, although she fears that clouds could spoil the spectacle. The eclipse will be visible in much of Europe and, in Spain, totality can be observed from different areas of the country this afternoon.
