It is not only Florence + the Machine that draws inspiration from Julian of Norwich for its work. Susanne Sundfør has also turned to English mysticism for her new album, ‘Revelations of Divine Love’, out October 2.
The title comes from the famous text by Julian of Norwich, written in the 14th century and focused on divine love. Sundfør discovered his writings while playing in churches with British pianist and organist Kit Downes, with whom he made this new album. The connection was so immediate that Downes ended up becoming a full collaborator on the project.
We can now hear the first preview, ‘I It Am’, whose title also comes from Norwich’s writings. And it’s beautiful, but it also makes it pretty clear where this album is going. It is not a typical pop single nor does it seem to be looking for one: Sundfør takes its time, lets the voice slide over the organ melodies and a heavenly choir and builds something much more meditative and contemplative.
‘Revelations of Divine Love’ continues in some way the spiritual exploration that Sundfør had already begun on ‘Blómi’, his 2023 album. The album was recorded with Downes in November 2024 in a church in Norway, Bragernes Kirke, taking advantage precisely of its reverberant and almost sacred atmosphere.
