Robert Smith is a guitarist for some very fit Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones have released another pair of singles on the occasion of the publication of their next album, titled ‘Foreign Tongues’ and expected for July 10. The new previews of the album are ‘Jealous Lover’, a melodic and sexy R&B that could remind us of ‘Beast of Burden’, and ‘Divine Intervention’, a classic rock ‘n’ roll in which the leader of The Cure himself participates on guitar.

What surprises most about ‘Jealous Lover’ on the first listen is not its apparent freshness, but the unexpected falsetto with which Mick Jagger begins the song and which he maintains until the arrival of the chorus. At this point in the film, obviously the song does not represent anything new in the career of the British group, but it does show that Jagger and his band are still capable of signing good songs with their essence intact.

‘Divine Intervention’, on the other hand, sounds like a classic blues rock song, but the interpretation of the legendary frontman is so lively that the song ends up being totally convincing despite being somewhat more generic than its release companion. The chorus, of course, would work on its own in any context: “Divine intervention / It’s not a possibility / Life is a gambling game,” sings a powerful 82-year-old Jagger.

It is on this song that, apparently, Robert Smith plays the electric guitar. The reason for this is totally unusual. This is how Jagger, who met Smith in the studio one day, tells it: «There was a guy with his back to me with a long suit on. When he turned around, he was covered in lipstick. And I said – I had never met him – ‘You’re Robert Smith from The Cure!’ Smith confirmed who it was and Jagger wasted no time: “Well, since you’re here, you’d better get on with something.”

It’s not clear which guitar part the Cure leader is in charge of, but we do know that it won’t be his only contribution to The Rolling Stones’ new album. According to Music Radar, Smith can be heard on the song ‘Never Wanna Lose You’, in which he also plays the synthesizer.
