‘For You’ is a perfect introduction to Requin Chagrin

‘Décollage’ is being the Album of the Week at JENESAISPOP. This is a wonderful new work by the French band Requin Chagrin, associated with that subgenre of indie-rock known as “reverbcore”, characterized by its extremely reverberated and melancholic sound, heir to dream-pop, post-punk and shoegaze, but identifiable as its own style, too.

In this album, the project led by Marion Brunetto delves into that evocative and cinematic sound, as Jaime Cristóbal points out in his review, through bangers like ‘For You’, our Song Of The Day today.

‘For You’ was one of the highlights of the review and also one of the official singles from the album. It stands out for “its guitar riff in the style of the great French masters of 80s twangy romantic pop, Indochine.” It is not a casual reference: the band’s leader, Nicola Sirkis, releases Requin Chagrin through his label. Everything stays at home.

The lyrics of ‘For You’ paint an emotional picture marked by uncertainty, emotional isolation and the longing to find guidance. This is suggested by verses such as “Au bord du monde” (“at the edge of the world”), “Tu nous laissais dans l’ombre” (“you left us in the shadows”) or the references to a collapsing world present in phrases such as “tout s’effondrera” and “tout s’écroulera.”

The chorus develops the contrast between darkness and light that structures the entire song. From the blue and black tones of “dans le bleu, dans le noir”, associated with loneliness and disorientation, we move on to a luminous image that represents the encounter with someone capable of serving as a guide: “Fais la lumière, tes yeux comme un phare”. Marion sings something like “bring the light, your eyes are like a lighthouse,” turning that figure into a point of reference in the midst of uncertainty.
