Planningtorock and Romy team up for a new version of “The One”

Planningtorock has collaborated with Romy in an intimate and emotional reinterpretation of his song The One”: “He has managed to take the queer longing for love present in the original to an even more tender level.”

Planningtorockthe Bolton-based, Tallinn-based electronic musician — also known as Jam Rostron— first published this song on his second album, “W”in 2011, a work that at the time was rated by NME as “a masterpiece of experimental art-pop.”

For this new version, Rostron has collaborated with Romymember of The xxchanging the pizzicato strings of the original song for richer synthesizers and soft, emotional vocals.

“I wrote ‘The One’ in 2009, when I was single and still couldn’t live fully as my trans self. Back then I felt very alone and the possibility of falling in love seemed very far away. Romy’s reinterpretation of this song is beautiful. She has managed to take the original queer longing for love to another level of tenderness and hope, creating something deeply moving,” she shares Planningtorock.

Romy He adds: “I have been a fan of Planningtorock for a long time and I have great admiration and respect for the music they make and the person they are. “Over the years we have become very close, and I think there is an unspoken understanding between us, not only as friends, but also through our shared experiences as queer artists.”

“Our connection and friendship made working on this especially meaningful. When I first heard the original track ‘The One,’ I was struck by the emotion just beneath the surface: that sense of longing that is both personal and universal. I wanted to honor the emotion of the original, letting the heart of the song breathe, as I took her by the hand and brought her to the dance floor.”

In an interview with NME during the BRIT Awards 2024, Romy commented that the new material The xx It is being approached with creative freedom and a desire to experiment, although without losing its sonic identity: “For now I can only say that we are still open to trying new things, but it still sounds like us.”
