Alcalá Norte and the philosophical satire of ‘The so-called Pythagoreans’

Alcalá Norte continue to present their second album, which will be released in September of this year. While confirmation of the title and exact date is reserved, the Madrid band releases a second single that follows the fantastic ‘El hombre planeta’.

If that song was inspired by the life of Paganini, resulting in one of the most immediate and catchy songs from Alcalá Norte, ‘Loscalled Pythagoreans’ seems to offer an equally explosive facet instrumentally, but with greater focus on the narrative.

‘The so-called Pythagoreans’ tells in a satirical tone the story of the brotherhood of the Pythagoreans and their system of life dedicated to asceticism, philosophy and science. The approach is pure Alcalá Norte, bringing cultured information to the street: “On his back with the coffin / and his geeky manias.” For Alcalá Norte, the Pythagoreans “go like gods”, “there is no steak for them” and “they don’t eat beans either”.

The mentions of Croton, the anti-earth and the voyeuristic strangers underline the historical as well as satirical background of the lyrics, while the chorus is a summary of everything stated. The insistence that they “don’t wear wool” is almost comical.

In the key of pure synth punk very much in the style of Golpes Bajos, the energy captured in the crescendo of guitars and keyboards stands out. In principle, not as outstanding as a single from the next album, it does offer more of what Alcalá Norte is in content.
