Jorja Smith returns to the UK garage with class and “cool” air

Shortly after signing the title track of the Prime Video comedy ‘BAIT’, Jorja Smith returns with a new single that promises to become one of the highlights of her repertoire, at least for what it represents as a return to her dance roots.

‘What’s Done Is Done’ also avoids becoming the typical ersatz ‘brat’ that has flooded pop in the last couple of years. Here Jorja throws herself fully into UK garage, but elevates it with a production that does not remain mere nostalgia: plucked strings that come in like flashes, an Arabic-style melody that provides dimension and movement and a vocal performance that reinforces that feeling of natural, almost instinctive, unintentionally “cool” elegance.

That same sophisticated air runs through all of P2J’s production, polished and effective, and also extends to lyrics that function as emotional closure to a love story that could not be. Jorja confirms the inevitable: “what’s done is done.” The other person wanted Jorja to remain “the same” as before, although that was no longer possible or real (“you were still hoping that I’d stay the same”). From there, the song describes deceptions and disagreements (“Lied to me nicely”, “Some kind of love, I guess we’ll never know”), until leading to a chorus that assumes the end, even if it hurts (“It’s the ending”, “Should have never let this run”).
