Gara Durán: «’Brokeback Mountain’ is everything»

What is known about Gara Durán’s long-awaited album? «I can say that it will come out this year, that there will be like three or four more previews and that there will be collaborations. “I don’t know if I can say it, but one will come out in April.” The artist’s latest single, ‘Mi loco cowboy’, is not only the first preview of her full-length debut, but also the first time in which Gara has allowed herself to create from the fun of pop.

Until now, Gara Durán’s music had been characterized by a tone, in the artist’s own words, “sensitive”, “intimate” and “dreamlike”. This is clear in the EP he released last year thanks to songs as beautiful as ‘Robot’ or ‘Kryptonite’, but he will try new paths on his debut album, of which he has briefly described its sound. «What I have done before was a small part of who I am and what I would like to do. The album is much more pop, but it still has my style. It has its fun point, but also ethereal. “I think I will never leave that part of me aside, because it also identifies me.”

This does not mean that Gara had a great time creating ‘Mi loco cowboy’, composed with Barry B and produced by the duo RYO. This is how it feels good to go to the countryside to make music: «We made it on the first day of camp, in a natural and genuine way. I like that the composition, the melody and the lyrics prevail, and build from there. The important thing about this type of practice is the organization: «Elías, my guitarist and an important part of the subject, was in a room upstairs recording guitars. Me, downstairs with Gabriel (Barry B) making melodies and racking our brains over the lyrics. The producers, making the base. “All at the same time.”

With those lyrics, full of romantic praise for a “crazy cowboy”, and the slight country touch of the music, it is normal for ‘Brokeback Mountain’ to come to mind. Filmin already made the joke on his Instagram account the day before the interview, but the topic had to be brought up. Gara Durán agrees that ‘Mi loco cowboy’ has enormous potential to become a gay anthem: “The truth is that yes, it is a very grateful song, and that movie is everything.” Dreaming is free. In any case, it does have the potential to be a before and after in Gara Durán’s career.

Gara Durán will be on the road this year and he tells us that there will be no shortage of unreleased songs from his album, which at the moment does not have a name or release date. Before its official presentation on April 25 at the El Sol room in Madrid, we will see it on Saturday, April 4 at SanSan. He performs on the same day as Barry B and it is no coincidence.

Anyone who has been to a concert of his, whether it be Gara or Barry, knows that ‘The Lake of My Sorrow’ is the moment in which the audience completely melts: «It’s a dream song. “I really enjoy singing it, but I enjoy more seeing people, how I feel it and how they sing it.” For them, composing together is something “natural”: “As we live together, we know each other very well. I know what he wants to do, his style, his vibe and he knows my style and what I want to do very well.
