The Navarrese guitarist Joseba Irazoki continues his series of explorations with “Gitarra onomatopoeikoa IV (+ Lagunen ahotsak)”fourth installment of the collection “Onomatopoeic guitar”.
Unlike the previous volumes, which were instrumental in nature, this time Irazoki surrounds himself with friendly voices to give shape to the five pieces that make up the EP, the result of semi-improvised collaborations that unite tradition and experimentation, evoking the artist’s origins.
The first piece, “Laphane”, is a sober and suggestive composition in which Ihitz Iriart He performs an adaptation of a basahaide, a traditional song from the Zuberoa mountains inspired by nature and communication between shepherds. “Lof” follows, a more playful song in which the voice of Prato Green He emotionally narrates the first spark of love. In “Pajarillo”, percussionist Carlos Jimena accompanies a piece that evokes the flight of a bird. One of the most unique moments of the EP comes with the reinterpretation of “Baga biga higa”, a classic by Mikel Laboa, in which Child from Elche He deploys an intense vocal performance over the monodic and arpeggiated patterns of the guitar. The trip closes with “Kapsula batean”, perhaps the most evocative piece of the set, in which Elena Setien gives voice to an atmosphere that describes the anguish of living inside a capsule.
Throughout his career, Irazoki has published three EPs and twenty albums, in addition to offering more than three hundred concerts throughout the Iberian Peninsula and performances in countries such as England, France or Italy. With personal projects like this, the musician reaffirms his position as one of the most unique figures in the contemporary experimental guitar scene.
