Flowers in the manure: La Plazuela, Girl Group, Grace Ives…

Flores en el Manure returns, a selection of songs that, as always, aims to give focus to proposals that may have gone unnoticed and that often distance themselves from the prevailing trends in pop and its hype. This time with an edition that alternates some of the albums and EPs published in the throes of 2025 that are very worth recovering, along with new releases from 2026 and previews of long works that will see the light of day in the coming weeks or months.

Among the notable releases from the recent past that we recover, there are long ones by such well-known and once celebrated names as La Plazuela -alternating city pop with rumba, among other cocktails, in ‘Lugar Nº0 (DLY)’-, Adam Green, Juliana Hatfield -the former indie rock star is in perfect shape in ‘Lightning Must Strike’-, McEnroe, Ariel Pink -who, apart from her controversial support for Trump, continues with his solid career -, Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hereafter, Midlake, Bejo and Damien Jurad, who, unbridled, has been presenting new releases in the form of albums, EPs, singles or rarities albums on an almost weekly basis for several months.

The works of Obongjayar -the Nigerian based in the UK re-released his album ‘Paradise’ at the end of the year including cuts as exuberant as ‘Give Me More’-, Casapalma -‘JOTAS’, from its title, reveals the traditionalist vocation of this duo, although they refresh us with a successful electronic patina-, Say She She -a kind of New York girl-group that alternates disco and funk with punk and oblique pop-, Julia Amor, Sabine McCalla – an unmissable debut album by this New Orleans artist who abounds in updating roots music -, Insecure Men – alias of Saul Adamczewski outside of his band Fat White Family -, This Is Lorelei – the traditionalist rock project of Nate Amos, half of Water From Your Eyes, continues to grow after the celebrated ‘Box for Buddy, Box for Stars’ – or The Cords – a female duo perfect for fans of the C-86 sound – well They are worth a recovery.

In our country, Los Yolos, Ghouljaboy, Las Petunias, Tetas Frías, Vez Era – in their debut, this eminently shoegaze combo included a brilliant collaboration with Rufus T. Firefly -, Calequi y Las Panteras, Gorka Urbizu and Syd dePalma – in whose suggestive debut ‘Paris’ includes Niño de Elche, Florent de Los Planetas and Heather Cameron – published very reputable albums. And, to close with 2025, highlight names destined to be great in the future such as Tom A. Smith – a young British man who has the approval of none other than Elton John, although his shameless rock is more aligned with that of Miles Kane -, Ecca Vandal – pay attention to this young Australian woman and her claim to 90s rock, providing a touch of fantasy and color – and Surely Shirley, a duo of twins whose origins do not lead us to suspect their love for sounds close to Belle & Sebastian.

Coming into this new year, we have come across very notable developments such as the return album of the Granada natives 091 -‘Espejismo nº9’ consolidates their celebrated comeback of 2029-, Ángel Stanich -the master releases what is perhaps his most solid and complete album to date-, The Soft Pink Truth, Pearl Charles -after the great ‘Magic Mirror’, ‘Desert Queen’ marvels at alternating disco and folk music Laurel Canyon style, Erik Urano, Jenny on Holiday – debut full-length of one of the long-awaited Let’s Eat Grandma -, Iseo & Dodosound, Nuevos Hobbies, Tyler Ballgame – essential for fans of old folk rock -, the Turks Altin Gün and Alice Costelloe. And in the coming months, The Notwist – the Teutonic combo establishes itself in a more heterogeneous profile and releases its second album in a few months in March -, Dënver – the long-awaited return record of the Chilean duo looks really good with songs like ‘A pedacitos’ -, Voxtrot – the vibrant New York combo that dazzled with its debut in 2007 returns -, Alex Cameron, Error 97, Lauren Auder, cootie catcher, Alavedra, Charlotte Cardin, Rita Ojanguren, Girl Scout, Hofe or UFOs – a combo that includes members of Phoenix with the French producer duo Braxe + Falcon – are called to give us even more joy. »
