Eric Dane, the actor who played Mark Sloan, the doctor turned sex symbol on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, has died at the age of 53 due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a degenerative disease that was diagnosed in April 2025. In recent months, Dane had lost the mobility of his right arm and used a wheelchair.
Dane, who was a water polo player in high school, took his first steps into the world of acting by participating in a youth theater performance of ‘All My Sons’ by Arthur Miller. After appearing in series such as ‘Saved by the Bell’, ‘Those Wonder Years’ and ‘Roseanne’, Dane took on the role of Mark Sloan in ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, the character that brought him fame. She played Sloan on the series until 2012, when the character was killed off.
