The Last Dinner Party imagine the life that could not be

The Last Dinner Party are about to perform in our country. Tickets for Madrid are sold out and the last ones remain for Barcelona, where they will perform exactly on Wednesday, February 11.

‘From the Pyre’ was one of the Best Albums of 2025, and we already highlighted ‘Second Best’ and ‘This Is the Killer Speaking’ at the time. But a song that cannot be missing from his repertoire because it has become a favorite of his followers is ‘The Scythe’. It’s our Song of the Day today.

This “scythe” naturally speaks about death: “don’t cry (…) each life runs its course / I’ll see you next time / next time I know you’ll call.” They thus come up with a calm and poetic cut, very well arranged, which usually appears towards the middle of their set.

Furthermore, The Last Dinner Party have promoted this wonderful theme in two very striking ways. The first was a black and white video starring an elderly couple. Its meaning is evident. Director Fiona Jane Burgess calls it “a celebration of all the relationships that make both feel like they can live forever; on the other, it is the fantasy of imagining what it would be like if your parents had been able to grow old together.

They have also included the song in a small concert that they uploaded to YouTube and which is worth watching in its entirety as a preview of what you will find these days on their tour.

Abigail said about ‘The Scythe’: “This song started nine years ago, like a prophecy. I wrote it before I knew anything about pain or heartbreak, about how the end of a relationship feels exactly like the death of that person. Once you know what it feels like to lose someone, you enter a new realm from which you can never return. You try to communicate with them telepathically through mediums or song lyrics (sometimes both become the same thing) and sometimes they respond to you. It can take nine years until you realize you’re grieving, but once you do, you see them everywhere: on a robin, on a street fox, in a Wim Wenders film. The scythe comes to everyone and you should not be afraid of what is on the other side.
