30 injured in fire on Ferris wheel at German festival

At least thirty people were injured this Saturday, August 17, in a fire at a Ferris wheel located at the Highfield festival in Leipzig, Germany, reports El País. Although most people have been hospitalized for smoke inhalation, at least four people have suffered falls and burns.

German police are investigating the cause of the fire, which remains unknown. According to local reports, the fire started in one of the Ferris wheel’s cars and spread to a nearby one at around 9 p.m. local time.

Highfield said the victims were “receiving treatment and doing well considering the circumstances” and confirmed that it was working closely “with firefighters, rescue services, doctors and police” to help the victims and clarify the events.

German rapper Ski Aggu, who was performing at Highfield at the time of the fire, has expressed his dismay at the events. Despite the fire, the festival continued throughout the weekend.

Highfield is one of Germany’s largest festivals and is usually attended by around 30,000 people each year. This weekend’s edition saw the likes of Macklemore, Mando Diao, The Kooks and Rise Against, whose concert was delayed due to the fire.
