Zara Larsson comes out, determined, from her “flop era”

Zara Larsson is experiencing an unexpected “revival” these days thanks to the viral performance of ‘Lush Life’, her 2015 megahit. TikTok is responsible for a “dance challenge” that has returned ‘Lush Life’ to the charts, taking the song to 12th place on Spotify’s global chart, 10 years after its release.

The viral success of ‘Lush Life’ has meant that the song has re-entered official charts and, for example, has just climbed to number 9 in the United Kingdom, once the Christmas songs have disappeared, giving Larsson a top 10 single on the islands for the first time in years (‘On My Love’ with David Guetta, top 15, came close in 2023). And ‘Lush Life’ can continue to climb positions, since in the British Spotify ranking its trend is upward.

Better yet, the success of ‘Lush Life’ has boosted streams of ‘Midnight Sun’, Larsson’s recent Grammy-nominated viral hit. ‘Midnight Sun’, which had already been top 4 in Sweden, Larsson’s country of origin, has just entered the British singles chart for the first time, so many months after the summer. Although the debut occurs in a discreet 91st position, it is notable that Larsson currently has two singles on the official British chart, as he has not had any.

Precisely, Larsson has been in the news in recent days for commenting completely frankly, in an interview, on her experience with the “flop”, that word that is usually associated with female artists, but not so much with male artists, despite the fact that they “flop” just like them.

In her talk with ABC News, Larsson analyzed her career, stating that, although she considers she has had several hits, she believes that people know the songs “but not her.” Larsson says he has known both success and failure and that living in a “flop era” no longer scares him. “I’m also allowing myself to have more fun, because I no longer have the pressure of having to live up to something,” he says. However, Larsson admits to having felt “disheartened” when she realized that the public “completely ignored” her proposal: “You have to move forward and act as if nothing had happened, appear excited, when behind it is something else.”

Larsson is referring to the modest commercial performance of all his albums following his second album and international debut, ‘So Good’ (2017), which remains one of the most successful in streaming history, especially thanks to the impact of ‘Lush Life’. In comparison, the numbers of both ‘Poster Girl’ (2021) and ‘Venus’ (2024) and ‘Midnight Sun’ (2025) were not as expected. Now, independent and owner of her masters, as she told us in an interview last year, Larsson returns, determined, to current music.
