Russian Red has given an interview to El Confidencial in which he once again commented on his controversial statements in Marie Claire in 2011, in which he recognized himself as “right-wing” when in a questionnaire they gave him a choice between two possible political orientations. The backlash caused by a beloved independent artist confessing to being right-wing was brutal and, 15 years later, Lourdes Hernández tells a version of the story that includes details that we did not know.
Hernández, who is promoting his new residency of intimate concerts, recognizes that he made those statements out of love. Specifically, she claims that she said that she was right-wing because at the time she was dating a boy who was a doctor in Philosophy and who also identified with that ideology.
“I always get into trouble because of love,” says the artist. «And at that time I was dating a boy who was a doctor in Philosophy and specialized in the decline of the West. He was a person who had an elaborate speech about this and I was fascinated with that kid. He was right-wing, yes. And when they asked me, I affirmed that it was too.
Russian Red assures that, although he indicated that he was right-wing, perhaps with little reflection, in reality “I have never voted right” and indicates that his entire family “is left-wing.” The controversy “generated such a shock” that Hernández believed he was the victim of a kind of public gaslighting, coming to think that he was probably right-wing and did not know it.
Hernández recognizes that 15 years ago the state of the right was not what it is today and that now he perceives it to be much more “radicalized” than then. In 2011 there was no talk of the extreme right as we do now. Therefore, at that moment “I didn’t feel the need to have to explain myself.” Hernández maintains that “if he had said that he was leftist, that commotion would not have been generated.”
