In the years since the hit of ‘Nochentera’, Vicco’s repertoire has been characterized more by the intention of establishing a brand and a sound – that melancholic synth-pop – than by trying to forcefully repeat the success of what has been one of the greatest Spanish pop songs of the last five years.
In that sense, we have known singles as worthy as ‘tequiero’, with Abraham Mateo, the unexpectedly moving ‘Como Britney’ or those included on that album, ‘Noctalgia’, which was almost completely convincing.
Vicco’s new single is probably his most obvious attempt at building a summer hit since ‘Nochentera’. The good news is that ‘Tiramisú’ is far from being a copy of that song and manages to stand out on its own merits.
This time, Vicco resorts to a very fun disco-funky sound that includes little strings, funny sound effects – like the jingle that appears in the second verse -, a cautious dose of auto-tune and, above all, a very grateful pop development that, as if we were in the 2010s – now that they are back in fashion -, uses the classic two-chorus structure. The result is a song that feels complete, instead of built from scraps designed to later go viral on TikTok.
The production, although not without details, never overshadows a super pop melody that will be too familiar for the most demanding listeners, but perfectly valid for those who are looking for nothing more than a fresh song to savor during the summer.
A very Aitana song both in sound and approach. The only downside is that it resorts to lyrics that include rhymes with so much colorinchi like “flying to Hawaii / I no longer think about your eyes-eyes / and I feel super nice”, forcing the hook. Of course, we will not be the ones who question the instinct to create hits of the author of ‘Nochentera’.
