Tyla gives luxury afrobeat in her global hit ‘Chanel’

Tyla has been one of the great pop revelations of recent years. The most visible face of Afrobeats on a global scale, her hit ‘Water’ exceeds one billion streams on Spotify alone and is the winner of a GRAMMY for Best African Musical Performance, a new category. ‘Truth or Dare’ or ‘Push 2 Start’ are other of his key hits, and just as outstanding.

In 2025, Tyla released the single ‘Bliss’ – very similar to ‘Say OK’ (2006) by Vanessa Hudgens – and four other new songs contained in the ‘WWP’ EP. However, none of them have made much noise. It was ‘Chanel’, a song released in October, that once again boosted Tyla Laura Seethal on the global charts.

Released independently, ‘Chanel’ exudes luxurious Afrobeats, the same luxury that Tyla wants and that she equates to love itself: “If you love me, you’ll dress me in Chanel,” the chorus insistently repeats, almost hammeringly. The production by Ian Kirkpatrick and P2J wraps Tyla in atmospheres and percussions as lush as the song deserves.

‘Chanel’ is one of Tyla’s best recordings, and its success is deserved. The song currently occupies position 24 on Spotify’s global list, weathering the Christmas storm, and on official charts it has positioned itself in the top 20 in Malaysia, the Philippines, South Africa and Singapore. In Billboard’s global ranking, ‘Chanel’ has reached number 30, its highest figure since ‘Water’.

Although Tyla doesn’t usually get into trouble, ‘Chanel’ has been the subject of a bit of controversy after Yung Miami, a member of City Girls, accused Tyla of stealing her song. Supposedly, ‘Chanel’ would be inspired by an unreleased recording by Yung Miami, ‘Take Me to Chanel’, and Miami claims that he even taught this song to the South African artist. Tyla has not responded to the controversy.
