The tribute to Mariah Carey, between solemnity and involuntary humor

Mariah Carey has been chosen Person of the Year by MusiCares, a charity linked to the Grammy Academy that, in the past, has recognized artists such as Paul McCartney, Dolly Parton and Bob Dylan. As is customary, a tribute gala was held tonight in Los Angeles in honor of Carey, with the body artist present. Although, watching some of the performances, he began to dissociate and think about returning to the hotel where he was staying.

The gala is being commented on, but not because of how well it went, but rather the opposite. Mariah’s shocked face listening shout singing ‘My All’ to Jennifer Hudson – the one who illustrates this news – says it all. Well, almost everything.

The truth is that Jennifer Hudson, despite her love for vocal combustion, can be said to have good technique and to have given a correct performance. More debatable have been other performances, like Kesha singing ‘Obsessed’, for some reason. Kesha wore sunglasses during the performance, as if she didn’t want anyone to recognize her. It seemed straight out of the ‘TikTok’ video (2010), the one where he woke up with an epic hangover.

The actor and singer Billy Porter has also been stunned, who has chosen the ideal outfit to pay tribute to Mariah Carey: a Whitney Houston drag. Her performance of ‘Always Be My Baby’ may have been good, but no one could take their eyes off her styling. For his part, Charlie Puth has sung ‘I Still Believe’ on the piano wonderfully. The problem is that, within the vast catalog of Mariah Carey songs written by Mariah Carey, that one was not written by Mariah Carey.

Not everything at the gala seemed like an ambush for Mariah Carey to bring Christmas early out of sheer stress. Maggie Rogers, for example, has sung ‘Honey’ with great pleasure, while Laufey has had a very original idea transforming ‘It’s Like That’ into a bossa nova. She has done it in her own style and Mariah Carey seemed to enjoy it.

It is true that in some cases the selection of artists seemed designed because there was no one else on hand at the time. Because if not, someone tell us what Taylor Momsen, from The Pretty Reckless, and Foo Fighters were doing there paying tribute to Mariah Carey. They have taken the task into their own territory, covering a song from that unreleased grunge album.

The tribute to Mariah Carey concluded with a performance of ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’ on January 30, and with Mariah herself singing the song on stage. He put a little more effort into it than he did in the MTV Video Music Awards tribute, probably while remembering his statements from months ago about the artists who cover his songs.
