The great and baroque return of Japanese Breakfast

Japanese Breakfast is one of the essential names confirmed on the Bilbao BBK Live 2025 lineup. Michelle Zauner, also well known for her autobiographical novel, ‘Crying in H Mart’, will present a new album in Spain that has just been announced under the title from ‘For Melancholy Brunettes (& Sad Women)’ and will be released on March 21.

Japanese Breakfast’s new album is inspired by the “calamities experienced by Icarus and other unfortunate people like him” and the characters that inhabit their songs go through “cycles of temptation, transgression and retribution.”

‘Orlando in Love’, the first preview of ‘For Melancholy Brunettes (& Sad Women)’, is an adaptation of ‘Orlando in Love’, an unfinished epic poem written by the Italian poet Matteo Maria Boiardo, in turn adapted by the American writer John Cheever, in which “the hero is a noble poet who parks his Winnebago (motorhome) on the seashore and falls victim to the siren’s song.”

‘Orlando in Love’ is, on the other hand, a rich musical banquet, like the one portrayed on the album cover, in which acoustic guitars and strings coexist in the manner of the best and most elegant baroque pop that you remember. It’s our Song of the Day for this Wednesday. Has one of the best songs of 2025 already come out?

‘Jubilee’, Japanese Breakfast’s previous album, was released in 2021. On the other hand, ‘Crying in H Mart’ is being adapted to the big screen, with actor Will Sharpe (‘The White Lotus’) directing.
