Cat Power, about to release the EP ‘Redux’, which celebrates the twentieth anniversary of her album ‘The Greatest’ (2006), has announced on social media that she has obtained her first Gold Record in the United States. In this case, his most unexpected subject has not achieved it (although it is somewhat).
‘Sea of Love’ has 119,286,031 plays on Spotify, it is his most played song on platforms, and its numbers are equivalent to 500,000 copies “sold” in the United States, the mark necessary to receive a Gold Record. The RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) has sent Chan Marshall a nice commemorative plaque by mail. According to the association, “150 on-demand audio and/or video streams count as 1 unit for certification purposes.”

‘Sea of Love’ is one of the many covers released by Cat Power throughout her career, in this case of a Phil Phillips song from 1959. It closed the album ‘The Covers Record’ (2000) and was later included on the soundtrack of ‘Juno’ (2007). ‘Sea of Love’ had already achieved a Gold Record in Canada in 2023, and now it does so in the United States, the artist’s country of origin.
Cat Power can’t believe it, since, although her music has been a crucial influence on superstars like Lana Del Rey, with whom she has collaborated, this is the first Gold Record she has received in her 35-year career. His case is reminiscent of Pavement’s from a couple of years ago.
‘Sea of Love’ was an austere recording of Phillips’ song. In a post, Marshall says that he recorded it “at the last minute” in a Brooklyn studio, and that he played it on an autoharp that a guy from Appalachia sold him for $150.
«Imagine selling 119,286,031 singles. What do you think my only and first gold single of my entire career is worth? “I ask this for a friend,” the artist ironically says.
