The Amarae Bangger Club can be what pop needs

Amaarae, star of Afrobeat behind the macrohit ‘Sad Girl Luvz Money’ and one of the best valued albums of 2023, ‘Fountain Baby’, returns. ‘Black Star’, his new album, is put into circulation on August 8. The first advance is an intriguing fusion of styles that only Amaarae could have imagined.

‘SMO’ (acronym for “Slut Me out”) is a Bangger club that mixes the “Ghanaian Highlife of Ata Kak with an evil low of Detroit Club”, in the words of the artist. As if that were not enough, Amaarae has been inspired by the battery redules of ‘1st Gaou’ (2003) by Magic System and ‘Rock with you’ (1979) by Michael Jackson. And to all this has added a “contagious melody of” zouk “that sounds like a metal drum imitating an evil synthesizer.”

All this means that you have probably ever heard anything like ‘Smo’. The new single of Amaarae is dark, sexy and modern, an atypical fusion of styles that points to globality and that sounds innovative. Amaarae may not be the first artist of the African diaspora who mixes genres and erases sound borders, but perhaps nobody has done it in this way.

“I feel like the new Donna Summer mixed with the Jackson Jackson ‘control’,” Amaarae says in the press release. He says that ‘Smo’ looks like ‘Love to love you baby’ and ‘The Pleasure Principle’ in the clarity of his sexual message. Perhaps, like those two classics, ‘Smo’ also mark a turning point in a stubborn mainstream.
