Terry Reid’s story is as amazing as sad. As confirmed by his representative, the British musician, nicknamed ‘superpulmones’ for his great voice, has died of cancer at age 75.
Reid’s career began in the early 60s in local clubs in England. Shortly after, he was calling the Rolling Stones on his 1966 tour as Vocalist of Peter Jay and the Jaywalkers and with only 16 years. During this time, it also became the only opener of Creams, Jethro Tull, Tina Turner and Fleetwood Mac.
It is during this time that Aretha Franklin pronounced one of the most famous phrases about Reid’s life: “There are only three things happening right now in England: The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and Terry Reid.”
His prodigious voice caught Jimmy Page and Ritchie Blackmore in which it is the most surreal chapter of his life. The first offered him to be the vocalist of what a little later would become LED Zeppelin, while Blackmore came up the same for what would later be Deep Purple. Reid rejected both offers and undertook a solo career that was not too successful.
Even so, many of his songs have been versioned by artists such as Crosby, Stills & Nash, The Holies, Marianne Faithfull, Cheap Trick, Jack White or Chris Cornell. Ignorated by the general public, since then Reid has been giving concerts in small rooms until receiving the diagnosis of his illness.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8rtghe4nzuhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c959v_3ssko
