As early as January 9th, one of the world’s biggest superstars has released his comeback single. Bruno Mars hasn’t gotten up as early as Bad Bunny in 2025, but almost. ‘I Just Might’ has been, for whoever writes this, a major disappointment: a single on autopilot mode, more sleepy, conformist and sweetened than classic, especially in its verses.
The same week, Stephen Sanchez, equally specialized in the sound of distant decades, in his case more like the 50s and 60s, has released a much more addictive single. It’s also retro, it doesn’t invent the wheel either, but at least its target doesn’t seem like an animated film for 5-year-olds.
‘Sweet Love’ is a bouncy song, indebted to the Motown sound, which like the entire Stephen Sanchez catalog, is about the importance of “love” in our lives, about not giving up on it after the work it takes to find it. Our Song of the Day for this Saturday, produced by Öscar Gorres, refers to the 60s, making it a natural option for all those who this Christmas will get hooked on Christmas carols that come from the 60s, like those of Phil Spector, or remember them, like those of Mariah Carey, and miss them.
The song features a colorful video, full of dresses from that era, and dancing people who actually lived it. They are, according to the credits, the Sánchez grandparents: Fred Sanchez and Linda Sanchez.
The successor to Stephen Sanchez’s only album to date, must be on the way 3 years after that ‘Angel Face’.
