‘Soltera’ has not been Shakira’s only success of 2025. Her single ‘Zoo’, written for the soundtrack of ‘Zootropolis 2’, the Disney animated film that has swept the box office, is still on global charts, although Spain has not yet opened its doors to her, for some reason. In fact, some are now learning that the song exists.
The main reason is that ‘Zoo’ is mainly sung in English, although it contains verses in Spanish. And this data would explain why ‘Zoo’ is currently absent from the entire Spotify top 200 in Spain. ‘Zoo’, in fact, has accumulated a long list of debuts on official charts around the world, from the United States to Nigeria, but Spain is not one of them, even though the song was published in October and Spain has always been one of its main markets. ‘Zoo’ has been a success, especially in Latin American and Asian countries, and the song has just been reissued in Japanese, in the voice of Dream Ami.
‘Zoo’ is not exactly a failure for Shakira, although it is not a mega-success either: on Spotify it is close to 50 million views, a fairly low figure by her standards, but probably the majority of children are consuming the song through its official music video and its lyric video on YouTube, which currently occupy the 17th and 28th most viewed positions in the world. Curiously, it seems that the song does not appear on YouTube Kids.
‘Zoo’, musically, can be described as a mix between ‘Waka Waka’ (2010) and ‘Soltera’, due to melody and production, although it is worth highlighting the influence of ‘Waka Waka’, since the melody of the chorus is extremely similar. It seems that neither Shakira nor Ed Sheeran – one of its authors – have racked their brains too much thinking about the song’s hook. However, we wouldn’t say that ‘Zoo’ is one of the biggest nonsense of Shakira’s career, and not just because its target is children.
That Spain has turned its back on ‘Zoo’ is even less understandable if we remember that ‘Zootropolis 2’ has been one of the highest-grossing films of 2025 in the country: it is estimated that more than a million spectators have gone to cinemas to see it and that its gross is close to 14 million euros. Shakira herself doubles the character of Gazelle, as she did in the previous installment.
