Pulp cover Johnny Cash’s “The Man Comes Around”

pulp have shared a melancholic version of the country legend’s “The Man Comes Around” Johnny Cashrecorded for the drama series “The Hack”.

In this version, Jarvis Cocker and his band give a personal and distinctive touch to the American song, which is part of one of the most crucial moments of the new dramatic series that documents the scandal of the closure of the newspaper The News of the World. While the original song sounded country-y, the band’s cover introduces a more ambient feel.

The series, based on real events, follows journalist Nick Davies in his investigation to discover evidence of telephone conversations in the British newspaper between 2002 and 2012. The song was chosen by the director of the series, mainly for the symbolic meaning of the lyrics, which appeal to judgment and reckoning. The song was originally part of “American Recordings IV: The Man Comes Around” (02), one of the albums that American Recordings released just a few months before Cash’s death.

For pulpthe cover comes shortly after the Sheffield band announced a one-off headlining gig at Manchester’s Wythenshawe Park next summer and were confirmed to headline End Of The Road 2026 alongside CMAT and Mac DeMarco. Additionally, they released “More”, their first album in over two decades due in early 2025, and they have recently starred in their own “Tiny Desk”.
